Chapter Nine

“Can’t sleep?” Marcel’s sleepy voice broke the quiet in the dark room, and Riley sighed.

“No, and I had hoped I wouldn’t keep you awake. You want me to leave?” Riley made to slide from the bed, but Marcel rolled over and lay across Riley’s chest. “I’ll take that as a no, and settle back down then.”

“You can take that as a hell no,” Marcel murmured as he hugged Riley tight, his hand sliding against the scar and tattoo on his left side and Riley couldn’t help but tense. Marcel’s fingers fell away immediately. “Sorry.”

When Marcel went to slide off him completely, Riley held him tight over his chest with his right arm, and used his left hand to draw Marcel’s hand back to the tattoo, and the ugly scars it covered. “Don’t apologize, love. Everything I am is yours. You might not be ready to hear the words, Marcel, but there is no hiding from the truth behind them. I’m in love with you, and you should know everything about me. The good, the bad,” Riley sighed as he pressed Marcel’s hand tight against his skin, “and the downright evil.”

Marcel pressed a kiss to Riley’s chest. “Firstly, I am more than ready to hear those words, Riley Marksmen, and just so that we are clear, I love you, too. If everything you are is now mine, then the same holds true for you. Secondly, I think there was something that both of us were keeping from each other, and now is as good a time as any to share them.”

Riley leaned up and pressed a kiss to the top of Marcel’s head. “Do you want me to go first?”

Marcel was already shaking his head. “Nope, me. I want to tell you what I was keeping from you and share in the laughter it will no doubt bring you, because now it seems so damn stupid.” Marcel propped his chin up on the fist he curled onto Riley’s chest, but his right hand remained on the tattoo on Riley’s side, sliding his fingers up and over the scars that lay there.

“You’ve been to war, and you know that there are moments of uncertainty, when you don’t know which way things are going to go,” Marcel said into the darkness, and Riley tightened his hold on him because he did know about those times. “Snipers have a term, when everything is up in the air. You’ve planned for the wind, the distance, the velocity, any potential factor that could affect your aim and you’ve taken your shot, but nothing happens. You’ve missed your target, you’re aim is high and right, or something took your bullet from its true path. Whatever the reason, you’re completely off target. We call it ‘no impact’, and when a spotter or a sniper calls that out, you know that you are now compromised. Your element of surprise and the knowledge that no one knows you are there, let alone that you have a target locked in your crosshairs, is gone.
